Palm Tech is one of many Australian companies striving to adopt business practices that help reduce our impact upon the environment. At Palm Tech we have a particular interest in the technology enabling this transition and set out to build our office and IT systems in an environmentally sustainable fashion.
To achieve our goal of using only renewable energy, we make extensive use of server virtualisation on energy efficient platforms. Some of our recent changes:
- Installation of a 25kWh per day PV solar system.
- Consolidating nine separate servers, including mail, web, file, database, development and application servers onto two redundant hosts.
- Through carefully selected hardware and custom modifications, host power consumption peaks at only 90W per chassis.
- Office PBX Server can support 40 simultaneous calls on a stable power consumption of less than 6W.
- Thin client desktops leverage the computing power of the servers without the client side power consumption.
- Installation and custom programming of Clipsal CBus control systems to manage lighting, ventilation and power.
- 100% of our hosting and development environments, and general office power requirements are met through onsite solar electricity generation.
- Retired computer equipment is recycled rather than dumped.
